St Petersburg State I.P. Pavlov Medical University (Russia) :

Common Information

St Petersburg State I.P. Pavlov Medical University is one of the leading Medical Schools in Russia. It was founded 110 years ago in 1897 as first Russian Medical Institute for Women. More than 60 years our University was known all over the world as the First Leningrad I.P. Pavlov Medical Institute. The present name, St Petersburg State I.P. Pavlov Medical University, was given to our University in 1994 by the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation.

The University contributes considerably to development of Medical Sciences and Health Care Services in Russia and it is recognized in the World as a big center for training specialists in various medical areas. The University has a great scientific - teaching potential and has good relations with many Medical Schools and Institutions in different countries. Students being thought at St Petersburg State Medical University have a possibility to study on the modern level keeping the best traditions of old Russian Medical Schools.

The University is a State Educational Organization, having a state license and state accreditation from Russian Federation Ministry of Health. It is a juridical person having property in operations control, banking accounts. The University may realize property and personal non-property rights on its behalf and conclude agreements with legal entities and persons. The University has a round stamp with imprint of Russian Federation emblem, its own headed paper and other University symbols.

Brief History

Pavlov State Medical University of Saint Petersburg (former the First Leningrad Medical Institute named after I.P. Pavlov) was founded in 1897 as St. Petersburg Women's Medical Institute, the first Russian higher medical school for women.

Since its establishment it became one of the leading medical scientific schools in Russia. Well-known specialists in different branches of medicine and basic biological sciences worked there. Among them one can mention world famous physiologist I.P. Pavlov, therapeutists G.F. Lung and K.G. Chernorutsky, surgeon J.J. Janelidse and actually working F. Uglov, G. Fedoseev, L. Potachov. Now the University is a major educational, scientific and clinical centre of the Russia North-West. Every year 600 new students enter the university.

At present the University keeps leading positions in Russian and World medical education, maintaining the western (American and European) standards of science, treatment and education as well as the best traditions of old Russian and Soviet medical schools. Every student gets individual attention from professors, teachers and doctors. Modern technologies are widely used in teaching. Since its establishment close to 50000 physicians have been trained there. More than 600 specialists graduate from the University every year, obtaining degrees of M.D.

The first information regarding education of foreign citizens is dated by 1910. In Soviet Union, training of foreign students began in 1945. Since then about 2000 citizens from 65 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America have qualified for the diploma, and more than 400 doctors from foreign countries have pursued a course of practical work, specialization, clinical studies or post-graduate research for Ph D degrees (candidate or doctor of sciences in medicine).

The University can offer postgraduate educational program (internship, residency, fellowship courses) for medical graduates in more than 40 medical specialties. Every year more than 300 physicians undergo postgraduate training.

Objectives of the University

  • Medical education: MD, postgraduate education, including PhD and doctor of sciences programs. All these programs are available both for Russian citizens and foreigners. Medical education is performed according to the Russian Federation state standards. Textbooks for students, methodic works and recommendations are regularly published by all the departments and are available in the Library.
  • Clinical work: all clinical departments either have their own clinics or are based at the leading city hospitals. All professors and teachers of these department conduct clinical work as treating doctors or consultants. Clinics have modern medical equipment for diagnostics and treatment. In surgical departments modern operations (including cardiosurgery and neurosurgery) are performed. In general, about 2800 physicians and nurses work at the University clinics, providing excellent medical care.
  • Scientific work: all the professors and teachers at all departments conduct scientific work according to the main research topics of their departments.

Background of the University

The main campus consists of 63 buildings, including clinics, department, scientific laboratories, library, computer center, and 4 hostels for students and specialists.

Some departments are situated outside the campus (Traumatology and Ortopedics, Pediatric, Infection diseases, Oncology etc) and are basing in leading city hospitals, including the first in Europe specialized hospital for infectious diseases (Botkin hospital), the first Pediatric hospital (Philatov hospital) and other hospitals of Saint-Petersburg.

Clinical departments and scientific clinical institutes, situated in campus, have their own clinics (Hospital and Faculty therapeutic departments, Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases, General Surgery department, Hospital and Faculty surgical departments, Ophthalmology department, ENT department, Obstetrics and gynecology department etc).

In general, more than 43 hospitals are used as teaching ones for students. All clinics, departments and research centers are provided with modern medical equipment.

Research centers

University has following Scientific Research Institutes:

  • Scientific Research Institute of Cardio-Vascular Pathology
  • Scientific Research Institute of Pulmonology
  • Scientific Research Institute of Nephrology
  • Scientific Research Institute of Pharmacology
  • Scientific Research Institute of Bone Marrow Transplantation

The research activity is also conducted by all the chairs and by 48 scientific laboratories and more than 20 clinical laboratories (breath physiology investigation; cardiovascular system physiology investigation, clinical biochemistry etc)

The University regularly organizes the work of local (mostly for practical doctors' education), all-Russian and international scientific conferences; its specialists participate in scientific conferences held abroad (USA, European countries etc) Clinical (for clinical departments) and scientific activity are obligatory parts of work of all teaching stuff

Some clinical departments of our University work with other Clinical Research Institutes and big clinical centers of Saint-Petersburg, which are not directly included in our structure but are conducting the research work together with the University:

  • Clinical Research Institute of Traumatology
  • Clinical Research Institute of Influenza
  • Institute of Oncology
  • Saint-Petersburg Center of Rheumatology
  • Saint-Petersburg clinic for Infection Diseases (Botkin Hospital)

Facilities

  • The collection Library of the University includes more than 1000000 books and journals, among them one can find medical textbooks, monographies, concerning the latest medical problems. New books are regularly added to its vast collection
  • Computer center with computer classes and Internet resources
  • Laboratories and scientific centers: see above
  • Hostels: 4 hostels with double-room accommodation (twin room). 2 hostels are situated at the University campus; 2 - out of the campus near metro stations.
  • Sports facilities: are available both at the free time (fitness center, sport sections) and during Physical Training classes. At the city suburbs there is the resting campus "Vaskelovo" situated at the bank of the lake

Admission information

For admission following documents are to be given to Admission Commission of Foreign Students Faculty:

  1. Passport with notarially confirmed translation to Russian (original and copy). Temporary documents given in some countries to persons under 18 years old are not accepted (for these persons national passport is to be received)
  2. Document of Higher Secondary Education with obligatory presence of grades for following subjects:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics and mathematics

Documents necessary for nostrification procedure:

  • 2 copies of translation of educational document (notarially confirmed)
  • copy of passport translation (notarially confirmed)
  • originals of passport and educational document (are not taken, are returned at the same day)
